What is the Best Webcam to Keep an Eye on Your Cat?

If you’d like to see exactly what your Maine Coon gets up to when you’re not home then a webcam is the ideal solution. But how do you choose which one to get when there are so many available. I’m all for looking at star-ratings but do like to do a little research of my own as well. That’s how I’ve selected the following three cameras to recommend to you.

My top three

1. Nest Cam Indoor (as pictured above)

This is a security camera which is perfect for pet watching too.

Best features:

  • It’s easy to set up – just plug it in and download the free Nest app for Android and iOS
  • The video quality is excellent – 1080p HD
  • The camera has a 3-megapixel lens
  • Has night vision – up to 20 feet
  • 130 degrees view without panning or zooming
  • It plugs into power so will never suffer from flat batteries
  • The power/USB cable is 10 feet long
  • It uses H.264 compression to provide higher quality video while using less bandwidth than cameras that use other formats
  • It sends motion and activity alerts*
  • You can have it free-standing, wall-mounted, mounted to a metal surface (as it has a magnetic base) or mount it on a tripod
  • You can operate it via Alexa voice control (Alexa sold separately)
  • There’s a built-in speaker and microphone, so you can hear what’s happening at home or talk to your cat
  • It works with other Nest and other smart devices
  • You can set it to operate to a schedule
  • It’s only 4.5 inches high

Not so good:

  • Quite pricey
  • *You need a monthly subscription for certain features
  • The microphone and speaker are not very powerful

Connectivity requirements

Nest Cam can only work when your Wi-Fi is working. At a minimum, you need a working broadband internet connection with at least 2 Mbps upload speed (DSL may not qualify).

You will need a web browser or a compatible phone or tablet with Bluetooth 4.0. Some phones, tablets and networks do not support 1080p.

What to look for in a WebCam for Monitoring Pets

If you’re after a webcam to monitor your cat what features do you need to check out?

  • Does it have WIFI? This is a lot better than having to plug it directly into your router which would restrict where you install it.
  • Does it have point, tilt and zoom functionality (PTZ) so you can remotely control where it is filming? This type is usually pricier.
  • What resolution is it? Some are 1080p whereas others may only be 720p. 1080p is the higher definition but uses more bandwidth.
  • Does it have night vision? Without it you won’t see any images after dark.

About Webcams

A webcam allows you to view what’s going on in your home remotely. The device has to be connected to your home internet so that you can communicate with it wherever you are. The faster your internet connection, the better quality your view will be.

On many webcams, you can set-up Motion Detection. This enables you to configure the camera to send you a notification whenever it detects movement. You are also usually able to configure it to automatically start recording a video of the movement at that time and optionally send you a photo of what’s going on (perhaps via email). You are usually able to save the recordings and images to several locations. These could be:

  • Internal memory card
  • NAS
  • Via ftp to a server
  • To the cloud e.g Dropbox or Google Drive

There are many apps for your mobile phones (either iOS or Android) that allow you to view these clips remotely. However, some manufacturers have their own bespoke apps that you have to use.

The price of webcams has been dropping for some time now and you can get some very good ones at reasonable prices. The negative side of this is that there are so many affordable ones to choose from that it’s difficult to know how to choose one. I hope the information here along with the three I’ve chosen above help you make a more informed choice.
