What is a Black Smoke Maine Coon?
The black smoke is the most commonly occurring black Maine Coon cat. It is often thought to be simply a black cat but is distinguished by the presence of a white or pale undercoat, often only visible when its fur is ruffled.
That said, some black smoke Maine Coons have a high-grade smoke coat which means their pale undercoat is more visible. In this case, a black smoke Maine Coon looks more silver than black.
How much is a Black Smoke Maine Coon?
Some breeders charge the same fee for their Maine Coons, regardless of their colors – but not all do. Maine Coon Kitten prices are currently in the range of $800 to $2000 so you should expect a black smoke Maine Coon to cost $1400 on average.
If a breeder is charging over $2000 for a black smoke Maine Coon kitten, you would be wise to shop around unless you are happy to pay extra to get your desired color.
Are Smoke Maine Coons rare?
Despite what you might read elsewhere, Smoke Maine Coons are not rare. Unless a breeder is striving to specialize in solid coat colors, the majority regularly produce smoke-coated kittens in their litters. For example, we bought 4 smoke coat Maine Coons from the same breeder.
If you are hoping to buy a Maine Coon with a smoke coat, you shouldn’t have any difficulty. On the other hand, you might find it harder to source a specific color and may pay a lot more for such a kitten.
Definition of a Smoke Maine Coon
A smoke Maine Coon is a cat with different color banding on each of its hair shafts. The roots are always paler than the tips giving the cat’s coat a smoky appearance. Black smoke Maine Coons are the most popular but there are many other variations involving the colors black, blue, red, cream and white.
The paler tips of the smoke Maine Coon’s coat are more obvious when it is in motion or when its fur is blown in the wind. The effect is spectacular.
